Dental Prosthetics - Dentists in Albania

Dental prostheses are medical devices that aim to rehabilitate the oral functions of patients by replacing the original lost teeth with a new one.

What are dental prostheses?

Dental prostheses are particularly complex instruments of different types, depending on the function they assume in each patient.

Types of dental prostheses

Each individual prosthesis is a unique and complex component that must be able to withstand mechanical forces as well as be biocompatible and meet aesthetic and phonetic requirements. Dental prostheses are divided into two main categories, mobile and fixed prostheses.

Fixed dental prostheses

The fixed prosthesis replaces teeth that have fallen or been lost, are permanently inserted into the patient's teeth. This prosthesis is permanently screwed or cemented onto the teeth or implants. The patient cannot remove them and for this reason they are also called immovable prostheses. The components of the prosthesis can be veneers, dental crowns or cemented dental bridges with natural supports (dental roots), which the patient cannot remove. Crowns are usually the most common restorations when it comes to fixed prostheses.

Mobile Dental Prosthetics

Mobile dental prostheses are a more traditional alternative, are implants that the patient can remove and are usually used for older patients or as temporary prostheses in some treatment plans where bone regeneration is needed. These are mobile appliances designed to replace natural teeth. The patient should remove the removable prosthesis at least once a day for oral hygiene. Mobile prostheses are divided into two categories: they can be fully mobile or partially mobile. If partial, the prosthesis is anchored to the natural teeth by means of hooks and is formed by a metal structure known as a skeleton.

The total removable denture is used to replace a whole missing dental arch. It consists of a resin part on which the artificial teeth are placed. It joins the gums and is then retained by the "suction" effect, which is possible thanks to the suction mechanism (vacuum).

The partial mobile prosthesis is used to replace a limited number of dental elements. It is installed by means of hooks on stable natural teeth or artificial implants. The prosthesis is usually formed by a metal structure called the skeleton from which it takes its name.

Latest generation mobile dental prostheses

Technological progress in recent years has made it possible to develop particularly practical and efficient mobile prostheses. New products in the field include nylon mobile prostheses, which have many advantages with regard to the aesthetics of the smile. They are very light and being made of nylon they are hypoallergenic and very resistant. They are mainly used in the case of temporary prostheses.

The crown

On a biological level, the term crown would indicate the visible part of the tooth. But it also indicates a type of artificial dental prosthesis, made of different materials, which takes the shape of the natural crown and replaces it.

The same tooth can be used as a support as the one that is subjected to a process known as monconization, the purpose of which is to prepare it to receive the crown. In some cases endocanal pins are used, i.e. structures that penetrate the canal of the devitalized tooth and are fixed by means of a special cement.

Types of crowns

The crowns are made up of two layers: an inner layer with a metal coating and an outer layer of ceramic. However, there are different types of crowns, each of which is made of materials that are very different from each other. In fact, the inner part can be made with metal alloys such as zirconium oxide or based on gold, platinum and more. The external part, as well as from ceramics, can be built using materials such as composite and resin.

The bridge

In the case of bridges, the compromised or missing tooth element is replaced by prostheses that also fit into the previously stumped adjacent tooth elements. Bridges are artificial substitutes for several tooth elements. The bridge is generally used to replace up to three (four) teeth.

Dental veneers

Veneers are special products that play a more aesthetic than functional role, so much so that they can be defined more as aesthetic dental prostheses par excellence. They have the structure of a thin shell, made of ceramic or porcelain, which is applied to the external surface of the teeth.

Dental veneers can hide defects that arise from the shape, color and even the position of the dental elements. They are applied using a minimally invasive procedure, which consists of preparing the tooth by light filing and then cementing the veneer.
